The 2018 Institute was held in Cremona, Italy, from June 12-18.
Despite not being a household name, Cremona is one of the most influential cities in musical history, and perhaps none is more important to those who either play or love listening to orchestral string instruments. Cremona was home to many of history’s greatest luthiers (violin makers), including Amati, Guarneri, and Stradivari. Today, violin making is a thriving practice; the town features two prominent violin-making schools and over 150 luthiers.
Strings Abroad 2018 will provide an intensive period of study while simultaneously learning about the history of the instruments they play and how they’re constructed. The week will conclude with a performance in beautiful concert hall in Cremona. Other trip highlights will include tours of both a Parma ham producer and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese factory, a violin-making demonstration, and a tour of a violin-making school.
